The world of telecommunications has continued to undergo “a sea-change into something rich and strange". Some people have gotten very rich: telecommunications is one of the most profitable industries in Canada. In 2022, the operating profit margin for Canada’s telecommunications sector was 22.2 percent.2 Not bad when you consider that for the first quarter of 2021, the standard average operating profit margin for the Standard and Poor 500 was 9.35 percent.3 On April 26, 2023, Rogers Communications, fresh from the approval of its takeover of its main competitor, posted a 30 percent increase in profits.
