Don't tax our benefits

February 1, 2017 TO ALL IBEW FIRST DISTRICT LOCAL UNIONS RE: Possible Taxation of Health and Dental Benefits Greetings: Just prior to the Federal governments winter break the National Post printed an article (Click HERE for article) about the Liberal government possibly taxing health and dental benefits as a source of federal revenue. On December 13, 2016, just days after this article was published, IBEW Canada met with key staff in the office of the Minister of Finance to express our concerns over this possible taxation of health and dental benefits negotiated for our members. At that time, we urged the Ministers office to not move forward with taxing the health and dental benefits of Canadians, instead to go back and look at other ways to generate revenue. We have continued to press the government on this issue and now we need your help. In our conversations with the Canadian Building Trades and the Canadian Labour Congress, we have agreed to share an advocacy tool created by the Canadian Dental Association and supported by many other health care associations such as the Canadian Association of Optometrists, Canadian Chiropractic Association, and many more. The Federal Budget is expected to be tabled sometime in late February or early March, the time to act is now. Please share this information widely among your networks.
